My friends, the alchemists at Baume et Mercier are at it again. Brewing up something for this fall. Its directed at all of us die-hard racing enthusiasts. Last year, Baume & Mercier surprised and delighted us with the release of the Capeland Shelby Cobra collection. Created in partnership with Carroll Shelby Licensing Inc. in Las Vegas, the line was a complete success, so this year they are doubling down. Continue reading
In March 2015, Baume & Mercier announced its partnership with Carroll Shelby International Inc. to create two exclusive, limited edition watches born from the DNA of Shelby’s most revered creations. Now, I should have gotten to this much sooner, but I have had an extremely busy summer and fall, and with that How to be Swell took a bit of a back seat, sorry to leave you guys hanging. Part of what I was busy doing was hanging out in Geneva checking out some beautiful watches in their native land. I even made a stop at The Richemont group, home of Baume et Mercier. There was so much to see, and I hope this post was worth the wait. This watch I am about to tell you about certainly is, it’s the flagship of the Baume Mercier catalog. Continue reading
There is a certain wonderment about being a dad. I have two young boys, and they are the greatest thing in my life. I am not young anymore, and my friends and I are constantly reminding each other of our age. We use reference points such as “do you remember such and such car, or tv show growing up?” It all dates us easily, but I don’t feel old. You see, I spend a quite a bit of time with these two young men in my house. You would think that the bottomless fountain of energy thy have would not allow me to keep up. On the contrary, my favorite place to be is on the floor with them.
Its been a very cold week here in the Polar Vortex where I live, Well and in most of the US as well. I have been yearning for something to keep me busy, While trapped inside my Igloo. My good friends at Baume et Mercier were Happy to deliver. I have been dreaming of all of the watches being introduced at the SIHH show, and what I want to see first, when I got a package containing the New Baume Mercier Clifton Chronograph. Their newest Clifton model is mine to wear for a week, how swell. Continue reading
One year ago I shared my first post on my own Baume et Mercier Capeland, so I thought it proper for the one year anniversary of How to be Swell I would again write about a Baume Mercier Capeland, only this time one that unfortunately isn’t in my personal collection. The Capeland flyback chronograph was part of their re design the year before last. The flyback is at the top of the Capeland series that was redesigned to a more classic shape and dial design harkening back to the gilded age of horology. Baume & Mercier describes it as: The sport-chic Capeland epitomizes a relaxed lifestyle and strength of character. This charismatic series resolutely embodies shapes, colors and authentic functions that uniquely represent the brand’s universe of seaside living at its best.
I just got this beautiful watch around Valentine’s Day. (By the way ladies here is a great gift idea for your man for V-day.) I am so pleased with it, I wanted to share it with you. It is the Baume et Mercier Capeland Chronograph.
It has a nice heavy feel, beautiful dial with arabic numbers, and a scratch resistant sapphire crystal. It is water-resistant to 100 meters, with the help of a screw down crown. It is powered by a Valjoux 775o automatic movement with some nice embellishments, unfortunately it has a solid case back so you can’t view it.
I always loved the classic black dial on stainless. Bracelet or strap, I don’t care which, however, this piece deserves a nice panther link bracelet. I also really love the strongly luminous hands and indicators on the dial. It is gorgeous.
I wore it today with a black french-cuffed shirt (French cuffs are the best) and my black pearl cuff links. Plays nicely don’t you think? The crystal has a nice slight bubble top shape that is kind of reminiscent of a pearl so I thought it was appropriate.
To top it all off I have to share this with you as well, not only does Baume Mercier make beautiful watches, but their advertising agents are genius. Here is the best watch ad ever:
Check out Baume Mercier, these watches know….how to be swell.
